How to facilitate the growth of confidence and self-awareness of Social workers and youth care professionals? Studio Bernhard Lenger examined and researched the possibilities of how to make social workers more confident in their work and how to help them grow within their profession. It is a shift from the individual to a team approach, which allows the social worker to feel safe and share their strengths and weaknesses within their team.
Social workers are asked to wear many hats. They need to be entrepreneurs, accountants, policy advisors, psychologists, community managers and fulfill many other tasks besides the work they are most passionate about, which is, caring for those who need support in a variety of aspects of daily life. While in many other branches, we lay a focus on passion and expertise currently, social workers have to combine many skills in one person, which can make them feel overwhelmed and doubtful about their actions. To actively stimulate the growth of confidence in social workers, we developed a toolkit to encourage a change of mind from the “generalist” to the “specialist.”
This experiment is part of the ‘Jeugd Voorop’ en.: ‘Youth First’ Project. Researchers, professionals, designers, and young people search for new answers to challenges within youth care. This is based on the research ‘Bijzonder Domein Jeugd,’ a long-term research trajectory in the transition and transformation of youth care in the south-east Brabant region in the Netherlands. The research and the ‘Jeugd Voorop’ project is on the initiative of a large number of partners from the region and executed by Fontys Hogeschool Sociale Studies.
